Winans first visited Charlotte, North Carolina, in 1981, when she performed as a vocalist on the well-known Christian television program The PTL Club, which was hosted by Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker.
She was a former member of the broader Winans family singing ensemble. But it was when they were students at PTL that Cece and her elder brother Bebe started a duo in response to the positive feedback they had gotten for their duet performance of the song “Up Where We Belong,” which they had tailored to Christian audiences.
They worked together to produce their first album, “Lord Lift Us Up,” which was released in 1984 on the PTL Records label.
