EXCLUSIVE: Interview with rising star Carrie Lane
Here at CelebMix, we love introducing you to rising stars who we believe will be talking over your playlists in the near future. Today, we’re introducing you to Carrie Lane, a singer, songwriter, and model who’s just released her new single ‘Drowning’.
‘Drowning’ is a confident offering from Carrie, which exposes the feeling of having your senses consumed by someone after meeting them for the first time. The track is chilled with an irresistible beat, topped off with mesmerising vocals from Carrie.
Carrie has been making music for most of her life, and hopes to inspire others to find their own voices. If you’re a YouTube fan, you may have already heard of Carrie. In 2014, she performed her solo music on tour with YouTube sensations Taylor Caniff and Sammy Wilkinson. She also attended VidCon in Anaheim, California, in 2015, as a creator for FullScreen. Carrie additionally performed at VicConA pop, a performance showcasing young pop stars at The House of Blues.
In June 2015, Carrie released her freshman pop EP Bows Before Bros. In the winter of 2015, Carrie also performed with Winter Lights, which featured IM5 and Hollywood Ending. Alongside being a singer and performer, she is also an accomplished model, represented by MSA Models of New York and Los Angeles.
Earlier this year, she released her second EP bad idea, under a different persona called Honey Thief. However, Carrie has now reclaimed her name and is back with a strong indie pop sound. Lead single ‘Drowning’ forms part of her new EP California Freaks, which is due for release later this year.
To coincide with the release of ‘Drowning’, we caught up with Carrie to discuss the track, what it’s like to juggle a multitude of talents, being on the road and what the future has in store for Carrie Lane. Check out the interview below!
Hey Carrie, thanks for taking the time to answer some of our questions today! First off, when did you first realise that you wanted to pursue a career in music?
Thanks so much for having me! I grew up participating in musical theatre, my original love was for acting and the stage. I performed in various troupes and productions in NYC throughout high school. It wasn’t until I was about 18 and out on my own that I realized I wanted to channel my love for music and performing into being my own artist.
We love your brand new single ‘Drowning’ – what can you tell us about it?
I’m so glad! Drowning is the first single off of my new EP ‘California Freaks’ which was co-written with ROZES and Pat Mencel and produced by Pat Mencel, as well. Most of the songs you’ll hear reflect on experiences and people I met during my time living out in LA. ‘Drowning’ is about that feeling you get when you first meet someone and they consume all of your senses. You’re not sure whether it’s good or bad, all you know is that you can’t stop it.
Can we expect a music video for it soon? What was it like filming the video?
I actually just shot a music video for ‘If I Can’t Be With You’, which is another single off of this EP will be out along with that track very soon after ‘Drowning’. I am a lover of visual content to accompany music, as I see it to be a very present factor in the music industry currently. There will definitely be more videos and creatives to go along with the new music.
We think that fans of Alessia Cara and Dua Lipa would love your music. Who inspires you musically?
I’m definitely a fan of both of those chicks! I’m definitely inspired by a lot of the female power houses in the pop world right now. You can catch influences from Jenny Lewis, Bishop Briggs, Lana Del Rey, Santigold, Betty Who, M.I.A, and No Doubt all over my new music.
You’re a multitalented singer, songwriter, video creator and accomplished model. How do you manage to juggle all of these elements?
Ha! Not a lot of sleep! I do a lot and I think that’s really the only way I know how to function. I’m a creative person, and as such I feel like I need to constantly be learning and evolving in order to be fulfilled. I love having my hands in a lot of different projects because it keeps me motivated and focused on what’s coming next.
You’ve toured a lot with various people including Taylor Caniff, Sammy Wilkinson, IM5 and Hollywood Ending. Who would be your dream artist to tour with and why?
Ahh, this is an interesting question. I love touring, I think playing live and vibing your music in a space with a bunch of people is such a rewarding experience as an artist. I think having acts that compliment each other, but also bring something different to the stage is very important. That being said, I’d love to tour with BØRNS or DNCE because I think our sounds compliment each other well, but being a female vocalist I have a different perspective on what we all sing about.
What’s your favourite thing about being out on the road?
I am full of wanderlust. I’m currently bicoastal and every time I see someone they always comment on how many places I’ve been or how many things I’ve done since they last saw me. I want to live my whole life like that. I love having a place or feeling to call home, but nothing quite inspires me like traveling. When you’re on the road you learn so much about the world, but more importantly you learn so much about yourself.
Earlier this year, you released an EP under the moniker ‘Honey Thief’. What instigated that change, and what made you revert back to Carrie Lane for your new music?
The ‘Honey Thief’ project was a very important part of who I am as a person. I wanted to write music in a different genre than I had always written and I think writing under a new persona was part of that. That EP was a part of myself learning and growing as an artist and also an experience I needed to have in order to be the artist that I want to be. I loved being able to write folk music and tell a story from a different background that I am used to. However, pop music has always been my passion and I felt like I needed to reclaim my name, my identity, and my sound in order to put out new music for everyone.
What do you hope that people will take from your music?
People often continue making mistakes because they’ve been making them for a long time. I want people to listen to me and take from my sound that I never stop changing and reinventing the wheel. If something doesn’t feel right, I change it. My music speaks to that. I love the imperfections in my voice and that some sounds you wouldn’t expect to fit together make you feel a certain way. I’m my own person and I’m not afraid to try new things or be different and I want other people to see that and feel that for themselves too.
What does the next few months have in store for you? Can we expect more music and live shows?
There is going to be a lot more new music coming your way! The rest of ‘California Freaks’ will debut before the end of 2016 and we have been working a lot in the studio to come out with more music in early 2017 as well. With that being said, I am very excited to take this music on the road and have people start hearing everything for the first time. You can definitely expect to see a lot of new things from Carrie Lane.
Thank you to Carrie Lane for her time!
