Jackson was born in Heidelberg, Germany, to American parents. His father, Clyde Jack Browne, was an American serviceman, stationed in Germany. His mother, Beatrice Amanda (Dahl), was a Minnesota native. His father was of English, and some German and Welsh, ancestry. His mother was of Norwegian descent. His family moved to Los Angeles, California, U.S., when he was a small child.

He has a son with his former wife, actress and model Phyllis Major, and a son with his former wife, Australian model Lynne Sweeney.

Jackson’s paternal grandfather was Clyde N. Browne (the son of Frederick W. Browne and Diantha R. Lewis). Clyde was born in Ohio. Frederick was the son of Alis/Allis Brown/Browne and Abigail Howell. Diantha was the daughter of William Nelson Lewis and Ann.
