Issy Wong Facts

  • Donald Anderson, Issy’s great-uncle, was killed by a Japanese sniper during the Battle of Hong Kong (one of the first battles on the Pacific front in World War II) in 1941. It was only after she took to cricket (in the late 2000s) that her family discovered that Donald, a talented batting all-rounder, was, one of the youngest (he was 17 years old at the time of his debut) cricketers ever to have represented Hong Kong.
  • After Donald died, Issy’s great-grandmother, Phyllis Nolasco da Silva, ran a network of spies in southern China for British military intelligence. After the end of World War II, she was honored with the ‘King’s Medal for Service in the Cause of Freedom’, the United Kingdom’s highest civilian wartime award.
  • Issy’s favorite movie is Cars, a 2006 American animated sports comedy film. When she represented the Southern Vipers (2019) in the WCSL (Women’s Cricket Super League, a now-defunct semi-professional women’s T20 cricket competition that was operated by the England and Wales Cricket Board), she sported the number ’95’ on her shirt. It was a reference to the racing number of Lightning McQueen (voiced by Owen Wilson), the protagonist of Cars.
  • Issy first came into the spotlight in September 2021 when she finished as the joint 2nd highest wicket-taker (14 wickets) in the 2021 edition of the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy (the premier domestic one-day cricket competition in England and Wales). The tournament, first played in 2020, is named after the legendary former English women’s cricket team captain Rachael Heyhoe Flint (d. 2017).
  • Her aforementioned haul of 14 wickets included a stellar spell of 5/49 (10 overs) in the opening match of the season – a performance that helped the Central Sparks defeat the Northern Diamonds by 2 wickets in a nerve-wracking encounter.
  • In February 2023, in the auction for the upcoming inaugural edition of the WPL (Women’s Premier League), Issy was acquired by the Mumbai Indians for INR 30 lakhs. In March 2023, in the team’s 3rd match of the tournament, she bowled a fantastic spell of 3/10 (4 overs) that restricted the Delhi Capitals to just 105 runs. Mumbai Indians chased down that target in just 15 overs, extending their winning streak to 3 matches.
  • She and her family are ardent supporters of English soccer giants Liverpool F.C. Issy’s father took her to her first Liverpool F.C. game when she was only 6 months old. She is also a fan of the Golden State Warriors, an American professional basketball team based in San Francisco.
  • Issy can solve a Rubik’s Cube within 30 seconds.
  • In March 2023, Mumbai Indians pacer Issy took the first and the only hat-trick of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2023 in the 13th over of the eliminator match against UP Warriorz. She bowled out Kiran Navgire, Simran Shaikh, and Sophie Ecclestone in her over.
